In this exhibition, I hold up a mirror to the stunning examples of architecture and visual culture which emerged during the establishment of the Turkish Republic through its execution of the “International Modernist Style” in the capital city of Ankara.
The works collected in this exhibition draw on a range of the my previous books, drawings, paperworks and installations.
Through these different mediums I sought to explore the synchronicity between the change in the facades of buildings and people’s appearances during the early revolutionary period of 1923-1943.
I create playful ‘artefacts of alteration’ which explore parallels between the morphological properties of modernist architecture and the restructuring of Turkish society.
Sometimes the work transforms the examples of the avant-garde architecture of the era to “body without organ” through the concept of “deterritorialization ”. The facades of the buildings, human flesh, and wall are unified on the wall.
